Captial Reading Council will host a Gallagher Books Galore program on October 14th from 8:30 - 11:30 at the Broadway Commons, 1300 Broadway St., Salem. $25 registration includes membership in ORA and CRC. This presentation introduces the new Gallagher Book Award nominees plus practical ways to incorporate the books into your reading, writing, and math lessons. Emerald Empire Reading Council will host an all-day 12th Annual Literacy Conference on October 14th at Thurston MS in Springfield with sessions for teachers from grades K-12 as well as specialists. There will be 3-4 sessions during each of three 90-minute time periods with plenty of choice for all. $35 for ORA and EERC members, $60 for nonmenbers. Mountain Valleys Reading Council Teaching About the Holocaust - OCTOBER 14, 2011: Teaching About the Holocaust, 8 AM to 5 PM, Integrated Services Building behind Eastern Oregon University, La Grande. Highlights of the workshop begin with a free Thursday evening public presentation, “A Voice of Survival” at 7 PM in Huber Auditorium on the campus of Eastern Oregon University. The following day’s workshop on Friday, October 14th from 8:30 to 5:PM at the Integrated Service Building on Gekeler Avenue in La Grande will feature the topics of “Guidelines for Teaching About the Holocaust” facilitated by Carrie McCullum of the Oregon Holocaust Resource Center and Robert Hadley of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The afternoon workshop topic “Echoes and Reflections” will be facilitated by Hilary G. Bernstein, Anti-Defamation League. Registration for the Friday workshop begins with greetings and coffee at 8 AM. The cost of the workshop is $30 for members, $55 for new members (includes membership fee), and $40 for non-members. Parking is ample and free. Lunch is open to many of the fine businesses in town. Space is provided for lunch packers and snacks will be offered at break times in the morning and afternoon. Teachers may register for one credit in ED 708 by attending both Thursday and Friday events. PDUs are also available for the Friday sessions. Activities for the workshop are offered in collaboration with the Oregon Holocaust Resource Center in collaboration with Eastern Oregon University, The Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center and the Anti-Defamation League. Portland Reading Council will host a conference on October 14th entitled Reading and Writing for ALL: Accelerating Achievement in Grades K-8 with literacy experts Linda Hoyt and Mary Howard, and children's author Michael Shoulders. $140 for ORA members, $165 for non-members.
