ORA Literacy Grants for 2002

This year we received 54 applications for the ORA Literacy Grants. The Oregon Reading Association gave away $250 for 20 projects or $5,000. The Literacy Grant Committee who evaluated the projects included Gladys Camber, Nancy Fischer, Stephanie Brockway, Vye Carlile, Kristen Taylor, and Beverly Farris.

1. Kristy McKinney of Blue Mountain Council area received a "Home-School Connection " grant to purchase Spanish books, tapes and activities related to literature.

2. Sue Hunt of Capital Reading Council received a grant for "Using Picture Books to Stimulate Thinking about Homelessness." This grant will provide two books and lesson plans dealing with the topic of homeless for each of 44 schools in Salem.

3. Kathy Moran of Capital Reading Council received a grant for "Multi-Language Books on Tape." The grant will provide books and cassette tapes so books can be recorded in Russian and Spanish. These books and tapes will be share through the media services available to all the schools in Salem.

4. Theresa Lehman of Capital Reading Council teaches at Whitworth Elementary School in Dallas. They will be using the grant to buy books for Family Read-in Evenings.

5. Tina Weekly of Driftwood Council in Coos Bay will use the grant to provide sets of books relating to wetlands for third graders at Blossom Gulch Elementary School.

6. Linda Deardorff of Driftwood Council in Reedsport will use their grant money to help bring in "Visiting Author/Illustrator-Nina Laden."

7. Carmen Bayley of Emerald Empire Reading Council in Eugene will use the grant to provide "First Grade At Home Reading Books."

8. Ellen Carlson of Mid-Valley Council will use her grant to purchase the "Rewards" program to help struggling 4th and 5th grade students at Waverly Elementary in Albany.

9. Mary Kay Dahlgreen of Mid-Valley Council will use the grant to help fund "First Book" which distributes books to disadvantaged children in local literacy, mentoring, or tutoring programs in Linn and Benton Counties.

10. Stephanie Higgins of Mid-Valley Council will use the grant to establish a book club for students in grades 3 through 5 at Sunrise Elementary in Albany.

11. Paul Ferris of Portland Council will use this grant to help develop a reading program at Levi Anderson Learning Center, on St Mary's Home for Boys Campus in Beaverton, Oregon.

12. Sarah Creighton of Portland Council will use the grant to acquire a collection of books in Spanish, Russian, and Romanian for the ELL students at East Gresham Grade School.

13. Jim Harrington of Rogue Valley Council plans to use the grant to purchase the Read Naturally Program for Allen Dale Elementary School in Grants Pass.

14. Teresa Trimble of Rogue Valley Council will use the grant to purchase books for a Kindergarten Home Reading Club at Helman School in Ashland, Oregon.

15. Susan Coleman of Capital Reading Council will have her middle school students select books in Spanish and English to record the books and design activities to go with them. The book, cassette tape, and activities will be delivered to elementary students to check out and use with their families.

16. Gretchen Freeman of Rogue Valley Council will create a collection of books and novels for her students at North Medford High School that take place in the geographic area they are studying each quarter.

17. Susan Dion of Sunset Reading Council will use the money from this grant to purchase instructional materials for ELL students at Cannon Beach Elementary School.

18. Rick Buening of Three Sisters Council will use the grant money to start the Accelerated Reader Program for the J Bar J Boys Ranch which is a residential treatment facility for adjudicated boys in Central Oregon.

19. Christie Ripkowski of Vineyard Valley Council will use the grant to help purchase books for the "Book Bucks" program at W.L. Henry Elementary in Hillsboro.

20. Sherry Adams of Vineyard Valley will use the money to purchase books for use in the after school programs at Neil Armstrong Middle School in Forest Grove, Oregon.
