LITERACY SPECIAL PROJECTS GRANTS

2009-2010 Literacy Grant Recipients

By April Hoy, Literacy Grant Chair

When classroom dollars are limited, teachers turn to other sources for funding. This year 25 Oregon teachers turned to the Oregon Reading Association to help further the literacy needs of their students.

I gathered a group of seasoned teachers to sit down, read, and evaluate all 25 grants.  Each grant was scored in five different areas:

-The clarity and completeness of the proposal

-The extent of the project’s impact.

            -Its value in promoting literacy

-The use of effective literacy practices

-Sustainability of the project after special grant funding

The top ten proposals (see list below) were awarded a $200 grant.

All grant recipients will complete an evaluation in the spring. The ORA Board looks forward to hearing how the grants promoted and enhanced literacy for children.  If you have a grant recipient in your council please encourage them to share their successes with you and your council members.
